Pavlov’s Fish

Brenton and I have had two Betta Fish (or Siamese Fighting Fish). The first one was Flush. He lived with us in Longview, but when we moved to Idaho, I wasn’t sure he would survive the trip so I left him with dear Cara.

Flush was conditioned at an early age. I would light my candle daily and then I would see him in his bowl. “Oh, I’ll feed the fish.” I would think. After a few weeks he learned that lighting the candle meant food. He became very demanding! If I would light the candle and not feed Flush, he would flare at me.

It took us several months to get another fish after moving to Idaho. Our new fish is Glurp. He took a bit longer to train, but he has gotten there now. With Glurp, his fish bowl is beside my red chair. I sit in that chair most every morning for my devotions and journaling. I sit in my chair and read for a bit and then look up, “Oh, I think I’ll feed the fish!”

As I sat in my chair this morning, I heard a clanking noise coming from the fish tank. There was glurp bumping against the side of his bowl reminding me to feed him. I guess he’s trained now too.
