Becoming an Early Riser, Part 3

“Some people dream of success while others wake up and work hard at it.”

When I decided to become an early riser, I hoped that in a month I would have developed the habit and would be waking at 5:30 every morning with ease. Now, I think more practice may be required before I am ready to move into the maintenance phase of this habit. I wonder if there is such a thing as waking up at 5:30 a.m. with ease.

So far, The best way I have found to trick myself into getting up early is to have my to-do list written down the night before. If I know what I need to do for the day, I feel a greater sense of urgency to get up and get on with my day. I need to do this regularly.

I am pretty regular about waking up at 7a.m. now. I can tell that I am more focused throughout the day because I am waking up on purpose. I have noticed that most mornings, I wake up at about 5:40. The alarm is set for six o’clock, so I decide to roll over for a few more minutes of sleep. Every time I have done that, I am completely out of it when the alarm goes off. This morning, I didn’t even hear the alarm until 10 minutes after it started.

Next week, when I wake up within 30 minutes of when the alarm is set for, I am going to go ahead and get up. Doing this will help me follow my natural circadian rhythms. 30 minutes is just enough time to get back to deep sleep, and that is not conducive to waking up bright eyed.
