Freezer cookin’ and pantry eatin’
Do you always shop the sale papers?
Do you use coupons?
Do you have a freezer stocked full of food and a pantry bursting at the seams?
I admit, I don’t use coupons, actually I hate the things. I try to stay away from garage sales whenever possible. And thrift stores are a good place for me to collect junk and drain my bank accounts 50c. at a time.
My frugal focus is at the grocery store. I scour the sale papers for deals, head out to hit both the grocery stores in town. I have a freezer packed full and a pantry bursting at the seams full of sale finds just waiting to be cooked into…something.
and waiting…
and waiting…
Does this sound familiar?
If I never actually cook the extra food, it sounds frighteningly like hoarding.
I’m sure I learned this hoarding tendency somewhere (Mom? Y2K? DNA?), and I have managed to perfect the art of only buying enough boneless skinless chicken breast to last me until the next good sale.
Right now, my biggest quandry is that we bought 1/4 of a cow and have 90 lbs of meat sitting in our freezer.
So what’s the problem?
I only know how to cook hamburger and chuck roast. What do I do with all these sirloin steaks and T-bones, not to mention the ribs?
Yesterday, I worked out a budget. We are trying to save intensely towards a down payment on a house. We want to buy while the buying is still good.
This intense savings plan has got me thinking about where else I can cut corners, and my well stocked pantry/freezer came to mind.
I am starting a new game for myself.
My goal is to go as long as we can without eating out or going grocery shopping.
Tonight we are having salmon patties with green beans. The first meal from my pantry eating game.
The first week should be easy because I already have the menu planned. Beyond that, this is an adventure in cooking and saving.
